Marjorie "Marge" Reid

September 8, 1924 — January 7, 2022

Bracebridge

Passed away on Friday, January 7, 2022, after a brief illness, at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, in Bracebridge. She was in her 98th year.

Marjorie was the daughter of the late Charles and Cora Stinton and was predeceased in 2003 by her beloved husband Stuart Hunter Reid, in their 57th year of marriage, and by their daughter Jori in 2017.

She was the loving mother of Stuart (Margaret) of Victoria, BC, Douglas (Kelly), Donna of Bracebridge, and the late Jori Jones (Dan) of Bala. She was grandmother to Ryan (Ali) of Fredericton, NB, Scott (Ji Eun) of West Vancouver, BC, Meaghan Reid of Vancouver, BC, Jorden and Kristen Reid of Bracebridge, January Duke of Bracebridge, and Devin Duke of Toronto. Great-grandmother to Emma and Hunter and Alex, Jack, and Anna.

Marjorie was born in Oshawa where she lived until the age of 12 when her family moved to Parkdale in Toronto. After graduating from Parkdale Collegiate Institute, she joined the Air Force in 1943, at 19, and was stationed at Coal Harbour on Vancouver Island.

After she married Stu Reid in 1946, they moved to Barrie where she worked in a clothing store and ran the arena concession stand while Stu played hockey for the Barrie Flyers.

They moved to Bracebridge, in May 1947, to open Reid’s Sportswear (Reid’s after 1960). After 20 years, they sold the business and Marjorie joined the teaching staff at Gravenhurst High School, retiring after 22 years. She taught English, business studies and then became one of the first educators in Ontario to teach computers in the early 1980s.

She graduated from Waterloo Lutheran University (now, Wilfred Laurier University) in 1975, with a Bachelor of Arts. She served on the board of the Ontario Science Centre, in Toronto, from 1980 to 1983.

She was a painter of watercolours, an avid book reader, a swimmer, an alpine skier, and a golfer. She especially loved travel.

She had a great life and accomplished all her goals. She leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship and an example of how hard work pays off. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Many thanks to the staff at Castle Peak Retirement Home, where she lived for the last five years, and for the wonderful care given by the nurses at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Bracebridge.

Arrangements are in the care of Reynold’s Funeral Home, Bracebridge. Cremation will occur and no service is planned. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital Foundation (www.healthmuskoka.ca). Messages can be posted to her Obituary on the Tribute Wall at www.reynoldsfuneral.com.
