Florence "Lenore" Young

May 18, 1931 — October 1, 2021

Bracebridge

Young, Lenore (née King) - Peacefully, on Friday, October 1, 2021, at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital, Bracebridge, in her 91st year, after several weeks of declining health. Predeceased by her husband, John, and her siblings, Mary Joan Muir of Calgary and Dr. Jack King of Grimsby. Survived by her children, Brenda McLoughlin (David) of Oshawa, Nancy Calic (the late Tom) of Bracebridge, and Alan (Sue) of Brookings, South Dakota. Dear grandmother of Jennifer (Rick), Becky (Mike), Jason (Teleetha), Andrew (Alie), Christopher, Katharine, and Adam. Fond great-grandmother of Mya, Payton, Renny, Cadence, Freddie, Kelsey, and Ellie. Lenore was born in Milton, Ontario, to parents who modelled the importance of community service. She served for many years as a respected City Councillor in Woodstock; as a volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society; and as the Treasurer of the Windermere United Church. Lenore was a graduate of University College, University of Toronto, and of the Ontario College of Education (OCE). She was a devoted summer resident on Portage Bay, Lake Rosseau, from 1941 to 2019, and authored several books about the history of the area. Her late husband, John, served as Mayor of the Township of Muskoka Lakes from 1994 to 2000. Many things made Lenore happy, including crossword puzzles (almost always solved), CBC Radio 1, playing the piano, sitting on the deck at the cottage, the sound of children splashing in the lake while she baked a pie for dinner, and poking around obscure graveyards looking for tombstones to answer questions about family history. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Shirley Harland, Lenore’s long-time care-giver and a dear friend.

In keeping with Lenore’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the Reynolds Funeral Home “Turner Chapel” in Bracebridge, on Thursday, October 14, 2021, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Please RSVP a timeslot below. Interment of Lenore’s ashes will be held at a later date at the Evergreen Cemetery, in Milton. In memory, the family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Cancer Society. These can be arranged through Reynolds Funeral Home.
