Ruth Brooks

September 16, 1922 — July 8, 2018

Ruth Stewart Brooks passed away peacefully at Castle Peak on Sunday, July 8th, 2018 in her 96th year. She was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Jerry, and her daughter, Shelagh. She is survived by her son Dan (Cynthia); grandchildren Thom Gill, Leah Garvin (Dennis) and Lauren Cleator (Scott); great granddaughter Gracie Garvin; nephews Alex Brooks (Linda), Andy Brooks (Maureen) and David Brooks; and brother-in-law George Brooks (Marie). Ruth Stewart McCubbin was born and raised in North Bay, Ontario, the youngest of 7 children of Norman and Annie McCubbin (nee Stewart). Upon graduation from the University of Toronto she attended the Ontario College of Education. She came to Bracebridge in 1947 and taught for several years at Bracebridge High School, later BMLSS. Ruth was a Registered Dietician. Ruth took a hiatus from teaching while Jerry grew the business of H.J. Brooks and Sons. However, while raising her family, Ruth was a very active volunteer in the community. She was a charter member of the Kinette Club, drove for many years for Meals on Wheels, and was long-time member of the Hospital Auxiliary, for which she was honoured by the Province of Ontario for her many years of dedicated service. In the 1960s as board chair for the oversight organization at the time, Ruth spearheaded the establishment of the first formalized educational facility in Muskoka for children with intellectual disabilities (Victoria Street School). Central to Ruth's life was music. In her early years, Ruth sang in numerous choirs in northern Ontario, and later in several prominent Toronto choirs while at U of T. She was the "anchor alto" and often soloist in the Choir at Bracebridge United Church where she worshipped for over 70 years. A memorial service will be held in the sanctuary at Bracebridge United on Sunday, July 15th at 1:30 p.m. Donations to the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation in lieu of flowers would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Reynolds Funeral Home. Personal condolences may be sent at www.reynoldsfuneral.com
