It is with deep love and sadness that our family informs you of the passing of our Mom, Rita Moynan (affectionately known as Riri by many). Rita lived a life filled with energy, connection, laughter, and heart. As a loved one said last week, “she lived hard and left a mark”.
Rita was born to Arthur and Jean Kaye on December 9, 1930, in Milford Bay, Ontario. She was the second youngest of ten children — seven girls and three boys — and is the last to pass from the family, at 95. Rita and her siblings passed on many stories of antics and mischief from their childhood and adulthood alike, which never failed to make us laugh and which our family will cherish endlessly.
Mom is survived by her son Rick (Lynne), granddaughter Sara (Joel), great grandchildren Aidan, Alysha (Aidan), and Nolan, daughter Nancy, granddaughter Mackenzie, daughter Becky, and granddaughter Amy (James). Rita leaves many nieces, nephews, and friends, including friends of her children, whose lives she impacted and who loved her dearly.
Rita was a proud member of the IODE, played a mean game of bridge, and kept fit by skiing, golfing, and playing tennis. She loved to paint, build, fix, and create almost anything. Rita became well known for her decorating and painting prowess and was kept busy doing so by family and friends alike. Mom loved to throw a good dinner party; she was a great cook and an even better baker. She was happiest when there was music, friends and family all around. I dare say she rather enjoyed her Medallion ciggy but was quite proud of quitting.
Mom adored children of all ages, and they her. She was at her happiest when spending time with her grandchildren. She had incredible patience and would cuddle, play, or teach them something new for hours.
Later in life, she earned her real estate license while living in Bracebridge. With her love of turning houses into homes and strangers into friends, it was a natural fit.
At 72, Rita suffered a stroke that took the use of her dominant right side, yet she rebuilt her life with grace, humour, and determination. For more than two decades, she lived independently — cooking, cleaning, and even baking for friends, all without the use of her dominant side. She rarely complained, instead making “version two” of life the best it could be. It was truly inspiring to be a part of.
In her final years, even in the nursing home, she continued to be a light — making staff laugh, delivering candy, giving it right back when teased, and meeting life with honesty and authenticity. A very special thank you to the staff on the third floor at Cassellholme for the love and laughter you shared with Mom. She truly came to love you all and found peace and happiness in your care.
Rita leaves behind a legacy of strength, generosity, laughter, and love. She showed us by example what it means to keep going and make the best of whatever life hands us. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished. The world lost a gem, and we are forever grateful to have had Mom for as long as we did.
We love you so much Mom.
Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date this spring in Bracebridge. In lieu of flowers or donations, please raise a glass to Rita and the love she leaves behind.
