Our dear, sweet Mom, Norma Jean Kaye, left us peacefully on April, 22, 2026 in Bracebridge, surrounded by the love of her family. Norma was an incredibly loving person, as a wife, daughter, mother, sister, and grandma, a loyal friend, and a role model who brought warmth, positivity, humour, wisdom, and strength to those around her.
Norma was born on March 8, 1937, in Omemee, Ontario, to parents Myrtle (née Nelson) and Kenneth Kettle. Her family moved to Bracebridge in 1942 and spent many years farming along the Muskoka River. She lived most of her life on Beaumont Drive and had a deep love for Bracebridge and the Muskoka region.
Her teaching career spanned over 4 decades. She began teaching at age 18 in Mactier before attending Teacher’s College in Toronto. She then taught in Huntsville, followed by several years teaching in Toronto while she attended the University of Toronto completing bachelor’s degree. She taught French for the rest of her career in many schools in the Bracebridge area. Her creativity and commitment to making learning fun touched countless students over the years.
On March 15, 1969, she married the love of her life, Gordon Kaye. Soon after their marriage, they moved back to Bracebridge to build their dream home on a favourite piece of her parents farm on Beaumont Drive. They spent many happy years there, raising their twins, Norman and Kathy, enjoying the beauty of the area and travelling across the country on holidays.
Her zest for life and travel took her on many adventures. She went out west countless times to visit her older brothers, her son Mark, and their families. She lived in Paris, France for a time and travelled in many European countries. She was inspired to visit places that she taught her students about, including Easter Island, the Great Wall of China and Victoria Falls. She visited Kathy in England, Korea and Zimbabwe, and went on numerous other trips with her travel buddy, Norm, including a cross-Canada train trip, a tour in China, an Alaska Cruise, New Orleans and Mexico.
She was always creating memorable experiences for her family and friends, and was dedicated to quality time together. She was known for her sharp wit and sense of humour, and she possessed such an incredible determination and fierce independence that allowed her stay in her own home nearly to the end. She liked to do things her way - and she almost always did throughout her 89 years.
Norma is predeceased by her husband Gordan Kaye, brothers John and Harley Kettle, and her son, Norman. She will be dearly missed by her daughter, Kathy (Khaleed Khalfan), son, Mark Peterson (Lori), sister, Wilma Fuller, her beloved grandchildren, Keyara and Kyan, and countless other nieces and nephews.
We are beyond grateful for all the incredible times together and she will live forever in our hearts.
Visitation will take place at Reynolds Funeral Home in Bracebridge on April 25, 2026 between 7-9pm. The Memorial Service will be held on May 17th at Bracebridge United Church at 2pm. Reception and Cemetery burial to follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Manna Food Bank or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
