It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Maurice Gerald Flaherty on July 16, 2025, at the age of 96, at Granite Ridge Retirement Residence in Gravenhurst.
Beloved spouse of the late Betty Flaherty (Nelson), who predeceased him in 2021. Loving father to the late Scott Flaherty, (2023) and treasured father to his only daughter, Jan Donovan (Mike). Beloved Stepfather to Rick Nelson (Sue) and Tom Nelson (Brenda). Cherished grandfather to Jessica, Melanie, Michael and Jamie. Great-grandfather to Ravina, Rian, Mikayla, Marcus, Lachlan and Lucy.
Gerry leaves behind his only living sister, Iris Watson (Bob MacDonald). Gerry is predeceased by his siblings, Lorraine Hawn, Ila Hawn, Margareta Longhurst; and brother, Robert. He was predeceased by his first wife, Lois Conway, of Vankoughnet, in 1968. Gerry will also be remembered by his many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, who gave him great happiness as he watched them grow and mature.
Gerry enjoyed over 52 successful years as a financial planner owning and operating The Gerald Flaherty Agency which expanded offices to Burlington, Hamilton and St. Catharines. Gerry was also a proud and active Rotarian, serving as President, was a Paul Harris Fellow, and in his later years, was appointed as an Honourary Member, the highest distinction that a club can bestow. Gerry also loved playing competitive bridge, gardening and astronomy. He worked hard to help facilitate the Family Star Party at the Torrance Barrens Dark Sky Reserve. Volunteering was his passion.
Heartfelt gratitude goes to ALL the caring staff at Granite Ridge, you are all so excellent in your work and meant for your profession. Special thanks to Dr. Bharti Mittal and to Shereen Worrad, you cared so much and always went above and beyond. Also, to Lorna Speicher, his kind and compassionate caregiver who never let him down. Much love and thanks to close friends Jim and Cheryl Hammond, who always supported Gerry, and were with him at the end of his time on earth. Your kindness and compassion will always be remembered.
A Celebration of Gerry's Life will be held at the Cavill-Turner Funeral Home in Gravenhurst, on Saturday, September 20th at 1 p.m.
That mischievous and cheeky twinkle in his eyes will be forever missed.
