Laura Mildred (Horner) Hawthorn January 8, 1925 – May 9, 2025
Laura Mildred (Horner) Hawthorn lived a full and rewarding life to the remarkable age of 100. It is with both sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived that her family and extended family share news of her peaceful passing, just before Mother’s Day.
Laura recently celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by family and friends: from Zephyr, where she was born; from Bracebridge, where she and her beloved husband Harry raised their family; and with many others who travelled great distances to mark the occasion with love and laughter.
A dedicated educator, Laura taught math, physics, and physical education at BMLSS. She was a talented ballroom dancer, passionate horticulturist, as well as an enthusiastic bridge and golf player. A proud supporter of the Bracebridge Fall Fair, she earned numerous awards for her baking, sewing and photography.
Laura was also deeply committed to her faith in God and philanthropic causes, supporting the Leprosy Mission and pastoral training programs in Africa. She was known for her sharp mind, generous spirit, and resilient heart.
Laura was the loving wife of the late Harry Hawthorn, cherished mother to Carolyn (Rob) and Ken (Julie), proud grandmother to Jason, Saralyn, Katie, Rachelle, and Natalia, and great-grandmother to Owen, Quinn, Althea, Rosie, and Murphy.
She will be lovingly remembered for woodland walks to spot trilliums, raking autumn leaves, sharing piano basics and golf lessons. With her treasured Sunday night emails, she was always keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren’s lives. Her strength and courage in facing the last eight years in a wheelchair were an inspiration to all who knew her.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Muskoka Shores for their compassionate care.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, May 17 from 4:00-6:00pm at the Reynolds Funeral Home with the funeral service at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 18 at the Bracebridge United Church, 46 Dominion Street, Bracebridge. Reception to follow in the Church Hall. Family burial will take place on Monday, May 19 at 11:00am at the Zephyr Zion Cemetery in Zephyr, Ontario.
