Kenneth Neil Wettlaufer

Kenneth Neil Wettlaufer, born November 9, 1940, in Gravenhurst, Ontario, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, March 30, 2026, at the age of 85, after a courageous battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Multiple Myeloma.

Ken spent much of his childhood in Gravenhurst, graduating from Gravenhurst High School before pursuing a variety of careers that all reflected his natural ability to work skillfully with his hands. He began working life as a mechanic before joining the OPP, where he served with dedication and respect for 20 years, primarily in Huntsville.

After Ken left the OPP he turned his passion for fine woodworking into his full time focus. He built and renovated many homes throughout Muskoka region, but his true joy was found in creating beautifully crafted custom furniture. Today, many homes across Muskoka hold pieces made by Ken - lasting reminders of his craftsmanship and a little piece of him left behind.

Ken had a deep sense of adventure and a lifelong love of motorcycles. From his early adult years onward, he would often be found on the open road, travelling throughout Canada, the United States, and South America, including memorable trips to Peru and Ecuador. Later in life he shared this passion by becoming a driving instructor , mentoring and guiding new generations of drivers and motorcycle enthusiasts.

He was also an active and athletic man who enjoyed badminton, baseball, hockey and pickleball over the years. He especially cherished cycling and hiking trips with his life partner Carrol, travelling together throughout North America and Europe, creating many treasured memories along the way.

Ken was known as a proud, stubborn man with a wonderful sense of humour. A natural jokester, he was deeply respected by those who knew him. Through his work with the OPP and as a driving instructor, he became a familiar and valued member of the community.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, Annie and August Wettlaufer and his loving sister Elaine Smith.

Ken leaves behind his son Kevin (Tannis) and granddaughters Keeley and Teanna (predeceased). He also leaves behind his life partner and best friend of over 25 years Carrol Reid, along with her family who loved him dearly: Robin Miller, Derek Garvey (Michelle), Elliot Garvey (predeceased) and Lee Miller (predeceased). He will be also greatly missed by 4 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren within their extended family. He will be loving remembered by his nephews Rich and Gerry Smith and their families.

Ken will be remembered for his craftsmanship, his adventurous spirit, his dedication to his community and the many lives he quietly influenced along the was. He leaves behind not only memories, but also the things he built, the lessons he shared, and the laughter he brought to those around him.

A private family celebration of Ken's life will take place at a future date. Close friends will be notified as arrangements are made. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Muskoka Conservancy, a cause Ken volunteered with and deeply believed in.
