On Wednesday, March 25, 2026, Keith Stewart Shantz died at Andy’s House in Port Carling just three weeks short of his 91st birthday. He was raised on the Mennonite farm of his parents, Leonard and Idella Shantz, Kitchener, ON. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gayle Mitchell, two of his brothers: Howard (Barbara) and Dale (Sharon), plus cousins, nieces and nephews in Ontario, Sweden and Norway. He was predeceased by his sister-in-law, Beverley, and brother Murray (Gwen).
To family members and friends, he described his life as full and varied – teaching auto mechanics, seniors driving and safe boating, mentoring students, cottaging in Muskoka, traveling, wintering in southern Texas, enjoying old time and modern square dancing and country western dancing, and calling for old time square dances (and he certainly had the voice for it). Keith particularly enjoyed meeting new people and establishing firm and valued friendships. To all of those who visited or phoned in the past few months, he said he had had a wonderful life and had “no regrets”.
At Keith’s request, a graveside service will take place in Kitchener during warmer weather.
Memorial donations to Manna Food Bank in Bracebridge would be greatly appreciated. Personal condolences and memories may be shared at www.reynoldsfuneral.com.
