Jennifer Mary Aileen Wood

January 12, 1931 — July 21, 2025

Bracebridge

Our mother Jennifer Wood died in her home on the Muskoka River in Bracebridge surrounded by her close family; Joan (Gary), Vivian (Tim), son John and granddaughters Mirabai, Fae and Sila.

Jennifer lived in Bracebridge for 44 years with her husband John (d. 2021). She met John at Jasper Park Lodge. Mom told us she had 63 years of great happiness with our dad sharing interests such as gardening and books. Both had a love for their life in Muskoka enjoying local events, and getting involved in the community, promoting or protesting, as Letters to the Editor in old newspapers show. They loved their dogs, and cared for the natural environment with a particular dedication to eliminating the use of lawn pesticides.

Mom admitted one secret to a happy marriage was to “do your own thing, too” which she did.

Mom was proud of what she called her ‘running ‘career’ which started later in life. “I went and bought a pair of running shoes at a store on Manitoba St. and just started. On my first run I went to Santa's Village and back, and then began entering local and regional races.” She went on to complete 5 marathons: Ottawa, Toronto, London, Boston and her favourite one, Nanasivik to Arctic Bay, NWT.

Our mother also often said, “Animals must be treated well” and she walked the talk. She was a great supporter of the Ontario Humane Society and served as first president of the local chapter. She was a founding board member that supported Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary and many residents might know she held a successful pet sitting business for 30 years from 1985-2015.

Jennifer was a seamstress, quilter and a master knitter, known in the family for always having a beautiful project on the go. “If you are going to make something, use good materials”.

Mom loved the opera and live theatre all her life, and shared that enjoyment with her children and grandchildren.

She often told us to “take care of your health”. She set a good example by walking and bicycling instead of driving. Even later in life Jennifer was still taking early morning swims from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving.

Jennifer had many good neighbours on Brofoco Drive and we thank them for their kindness in these last few years. They commented to us how often they observed her walking her dog no matter the weather, and admired her distinctive colourful wardrobe!

We will all miss having conversations with her on many topics from politics to world affairs. Her granddaughters found her easy to talk to. Our mother was a good listener. Thanks Mom. Thanks Nana.

Jennifer donated her body to the Anatomy Program at University of Guelph. Special thanks to Tara Green RN and Dr Shannon Lees. There will be no ceremony. Donations to the Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary appreciated.
