Hélène Marie Diane Brochu

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the family announces the sudden passing of Hélène Marie Diane Brochu on Sunday, March 1, 2026 at her home in Bracebridge Ontario at the age of 67. Cherished sister of Marie-Anne (late Ernest) Chrétien, Suzanne (Richard) Brochu-Ranta, Denis Brochu, Pauline (Bruce) Wallace and cherished friend, Melanie Rogers. Hélène was predeceased by her parents, Claude and Claire Brochu and her brother, Michel Brochu. She will be missed by her nephews, Eric (Priyam) Ranta, Karl Ranta, Craig (Claire) Eden, her nieces, Natasha (Kate) O’Brien and Michelle (Romnick) Eden-Vertudazo, grand-nieces Lucy and Leora, grand-nephews Otis, James and Bodhi and very special friends, Keith Girard and Sarah Girard.

Hélène had a university degree in Kinesiology and one in Psychology from the University of Waterloo. Hélène was employed at Corrections Services Canada (CSC) for 33 years in various capacities: correctional officer, personal development officer, coordinator personal development officer, acting program manager, assistant warden and acting deputy warden. While employed at CSC, Hélène was selected as their representative to Canada’s contribution to hurricane relief efforts in Haiti and spent two years working there for the United Nations. She was awarded 3 Peacekeeping Medals from the United Nations and an Exemplary Service Award from CSC. In the latter part of her career, Hélène also worked for 2 years in Africa as an INL Senior Correctional Advisor for the United States government to support their “soft power” efforts in the Sahel Region of Africa (Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger and Morocco). In her retirement, Hélène was a Volunteer Emergency Response Team Responder for the Canadian Red Cross.

Her talents and interests were far ranging: stain glass crafting, home renovations, stamp collecting, woodworking, knitting, crocheting, teaching herself how to play a variety of musical instruments, writing, reading, dabbling in the stock market and keeping herself up to date on technology. You could always count on Hélène to attend all family gathering events. Her sisters will especially miss celebrating milestone birthdays with their cherished sister.

Funeral Details:

Funeral mass will be held at Noon, Saturday, March 21, 2026, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 118 McMurray Street, Bracebridge, Ontario. The family will receive family and friends from 11 am to Noon in the church foyer. Interment will be held at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery in Welland, Ontario.

C’est avec une profonde tristesse que la famille vous annonce la mort subite d’Hélène Marie Diane Brochu, survenu le 1 mars 2026 à sa résidence à Bracebridge Ontario à l’âge de 67 ans. Sœur bien-aimée de Marie-Anne (feu Ernest) Chrétien, Suzanne (Richard) Brochu-Ranta, Denis Brochu, Pauline (Bruce) Wallace et très chère amie, Melanie Rogers. Hélène est allée joindre ses parents, Claude et Claire Brochu et son frère, Michel Brochu, qui l’attendaient avec tant d’amour. Elle laisse dans le chagrin ses neveux, Eric (Priyam) Ranta, Karl Ranta, Craig (Claire) Eden, ses nièces, Natasha (Kate) O’Brien et Michelle (Romnick) Eden-Vertudazo, petites-nièces, Lucy et Leora, petits-neveux, Otis, James et Bodhi and chers amis Keith Girard et Sarah Girard.

Hélène possèdait un degré universitaire en kinésiologie et en psychologie de l’université de Waterloo. Elle a travaillé pour le Service correctionnel Canada (SCC) pendant 33 ans dans divers postes : agent correctionnel, agent de développement personnel, coordinatrice d’agents développement personnel, responsable de programme par intérim, directrice adjointe et directrice adjoint par intérim. Pendant qu’elle travaillait pour SCC, Hélène a été sélectionnée comme leurs représentante envers la contribution du Canada aux efforts de secours suite à l’ouragan en Haïti et a passé 2 ans là à travailler pour les Nations Unis. Elle a reçu trois médailles pour le maintien de la paix des Nations Unis et une médaille pour services exemplaires de SCC. Dans la dernière partie de sa carrière, Hélène a aussi travaillé pour 2 ans en Afrique comme conseillère principale sur les affaires pénitentiaires INL pour le gouvernement des États-Unis afin de supporter les efforts « soft power » dans la région du Sahel en Afrique (Mauritanie, Faux Burkina, Niger et Maroc). À sa retraite, Hélène était secouriste bénévole de l’équipe d’intervention d’urgence de la Croix-Rouge canadienne. Ses talents et ses intérêts étaient très variés : fabrication de vitraux, rénovations domiciliaires, philatélie, voyager, travail de bois, tricot, crocheter, apprendre par elle-même à jouer divers instruments de musique, écrire, lire, s’essayer au marché boursier et se tenir au courant des évolutions technologiques. On pouvait toujours compter sur Hélène pour assister à toutes les réunions de famille. Ses sœurs regretteront tout particulièrement de ne pas pouvoir célébrer les anniversaires importants avec leur sœur adorée.

Détails des funérailles :

Messe funéraire sera célébrée à 12h, samedi, le 21 mars, 2026 à l’église catholique St.Joseph, 118, rue McMurray, Bracebridge, Ontario. La famille recevra la parenté et amis de 11h à 12h dans le foyer de l’église. L’inhumation aura lieu à une date ultérieure au cimitière Holy Cross à Welland Ontario.
