Edward "Owen" Mcquillen

August 28, 1932 — September 4, 2022

A day before their 69th wedding anniversary Owen, with his daughter/nurse by his side passed away peacefully at Southlake Hospital in Newmarket after a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer. He leaves behind his precious wife Donna.

Their love story boasted an unwavering devotion and adoration for each other. They met at a church dance in high school both attending separate high schools. They raised their seven children in Toronto until Owen decided to move the brood out of the hustle and bustle of the city to an area he loved and spent many summers at his grandparents’ cottage.

7 children: LouAnne Miller (Ross), Michael, Peter, Patrick (Tim), Christopher (Karen), Lisa Fitzmaurice (Greg), Ann Sullivan (Fraser).

13 Grandchildren: Erin Shier (Bryan), Emily Pearcey (Josh), Nicole (Mike Carlson), Pamela (Troy Crowder), Brent, Joshua, Amy Simioni (Trevor), Amanda (Adrian), Luke (Jacklyn), Brittany Fitzmaurice, Jillian Fitzmaurice, Spencer Sullivan, Maeve Sullivan.

11 Great Grandchildren: James Shier, Lilly Shier, Jade Pearcey, Megan Pearcey, Hailey and Cohen Carlson, Thomas and Tessa McQuillen, Carson and Charlie Crowder, Zoe Simioni. Dog: Sir McDuff (Duffy).

Before retirement Owen managed the small claims court in Bracebridge and was also the Bailiff. He and Donna owned and operated the Lofty Pines Motel and finally settled on Tough Lane surrounded by a welcoming and close-knit neighbourhood that they loved. He took up a stained-glass hobby with Donna the artist as his designer and mentor. Always a quick wit and kibitzer whether sarcastic or not he always had a twinkle in his eye.

The family wishes to thank the exemplary care he received in ICU in Bracebridge with his internists Dr Megan Demitre and Dr Luke Wu, and nurses Page, Krista, Trish, Cheryl, Sue and the rest of the amazing team. Dr. Crystal Kavanagh, Head of thoracic surgery in Newmarket and the wonderful nursing staff Ben, Stephen, Brianna, Erin and Gifty that didn’t just see a 90-year-old man but someone they truly cared about.

As per Owen’s wishes he has been cremated and, in his honour, a private family gathering will take place on Sunday September 11/22.
