Dorothea Elsie Clara McDermott

January 24, 1935 — May 1, 2024

Bracebridge

The family of Dorothea Elsie Clara McDermott (nee Keall) of Bracebridge Ontario, are sad to announce her passing on Wednesday, May 1st, 2024, at Andy’s House, Port Carling, at the age of 89.

A 25-year cancer survivor prior to her recent diagnosis, Dorothea celebrated life every single day. Dorothea’s love of fashion made her instantly recognizable in a crowd, along with her brilliant smile that made everyone feel the warmth of her friendship. Her kindness, generosity, and humour will be some of the most enduring aspects of her legacy.

Dorothea will be missed forever by her husband of 67 years, Dale McDermott, her faithful and loving son Donald McDermott, her son-in-law Joseph Davey, her adoring granddaughters Allison (Sean), and Alexandra (Matthew), her three great-grandchildren that she loved to spoil, Sally, Mary, and Billy, and many cherished nieces and nephews.

Dorothea is predeceased by parents Allan and Albertina Keall, her son David and daughter Deborah, as well as her seven Keall brothers and sisters, Minerva, Kenneth, Jessie, Norman, Ernest, Ivan, and Grace.

Her family and friends will always remember Dorothea spending summers gardening and enjoying the sun in Beaumaris. "The cottage" is where so many fond memories were made, and Dorothea made every visit special. Her Christmases and holidays were delivered with joy and a twinkle in her eye. She loved hosting parties, and seeing her family and friends enjoy themselves- always starting and ending with a warm hug at the front door. She was a tireless caregiver, and a source of comfort to many.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at Andy’s House who made her final days as comfortable as possible.

A Memorial Service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church,120 Taylor Road, Bracebridge, on Saturday, May 25th, at 11:00 a.m., followed by a Reception in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Canadian Cancer Society, or Andy’s House in her name.

We will love you forever, Nana.
