Doris Eileen Smellie (née Readdy) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Andy’s House in Port Carling, Ontario, on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at the age of 88.
Doris was the beloved wife of the late Paul Alexander Smellie and a loving mother to Neil and (Marianne), Ross and (Lori), and Andrew and (Tammy). She was a cherished grandmother, affectionately known as Chief and Gran, to Paul (Brittany), Jessie (Austin), Jane, Lauren, and Nathan, and a proud Nana to Grace and Cameron. She was predeceased by her parents, Jessie Nelson and William Readdy, and her stepfather, Gordon Sangwin.
Born in Toronto, Doris attended secretarial school before beginning her working career as secretary to William Coutts at Coutts Hallmark. After meeting Paul, they settled in Toronto to raise their family. Doris was actively involved with the Avonlea Curling Club and minor hockey, while summers were spent enjoying time together at the family cottage on Lake of Bays.
In 1980, the family moved to Bracebridge, where Paul purchased The Thomas Company jewellery store. In 1986, Doris opened Smellies Card Shop in downtown Bracebridge, which she proudly owned and operated until her retirement in 2002. She was also an active member of the Bracebridge Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Probus Club of Bracebridge.
Doris enjoyed many things in life, including summers at the family cottage on Lake of Bays, travelling, British television shows, movies, and keeping up with the Royal Family. Family and friends were always important to her. She treasured time spent together celebrating special occasions, enjoying high teas and the theatre, and, of course, playing cards. These gatherings created many wonderful memories that her family and friends will continue to cherish.
Doris will be remembered for her intelligence, independence, quick wit, and the love and laughter she brought to those around her. She lived life on her own terms and leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be treasured by all who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at South Muskoka Memorial Hospital and everyone at Andy’s House for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Doris and her family.
At Doris’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Andy’s House (Hospice Muskoka).
