(Bernice) Ann Locke (née Brown): December 1, 1926-August 8, 2023. Ann passed away after 96 years of kindness, love, and adventure. Ann is predeceased by her beloved husband Murray (1925-2020). Devoted mother to Barbara and Neil (Bracebridge), Jennifer and Arthur (North Bay), Andrew (deceased 1963), and Peter and Lisa (Barrie). Adored Nana to 13 grandchildren (Clare, Laura, Adrienne, Brandon, Brittany, Bryson, McKenzie, Alyssa, Emily, Simon, Emma, Abby, and Ian) and 7 great-grandchildren (Breanna, Jacob, Matthew, Ethan, Hudson, Logan, Carrington and 2 more on the way).
Ann worked for Massey Harris in Toronto in the 40’s and then devoted the next 20+ years to Murray and their growing family. Ann returned to the workplace in the 70’s and was the founder and CEO (and the Ann) of Raggedy Ann Daycares in Barrie. The centers grew over the years to 6 around the city and were eventually bought out by the YMCA. Her love of children was ever-present, as her family can all enthusiastically attest. She incorporated this love and inclusion by welcoming children with physical and mental disabilities to all her daycare centers, making this a first for Ontario Ministry-sponsored facilities. She also spearheaded the first shared new-build center at Georgian College in 1974.
Ann and Murray’s retirement years were split between Tucson, Arizona, Stonewall Island on Lake Muskoka, and their home in Bracebridge. They continued to travel the world, cruising to every continent and making friends with all they encountered. Ann loved camping, baking, crosswords, playing the piano and was an avid Jeopardy fan. She had a love of all sports, taking home many Senior Olympic golds in both golf and table tennis. She took great delight in watching televised Blue Jays games complete with her coaching counterpoints. She was compassionate, adventurous, playful, and ever so loving. We will all miss her dearly.
Cremation has taken place and a service to celebrate her life will be announced at a later date. Donations to the caring and welcoming Andy’s House Hospice Muskoka www.hospicemuskoka.com would be appreciated. Condolences may be shared through www.reynoldsfuneral.com
